We go to extraordinary lengths to make sure your messages are only delivered when they truly need to be. No accidents. No false alarms.

Stage 1: Gentle Reminder

When your check-in is due, we send a friendly push notification and in-app alert. One tap and you're good.

Stage 2: Reaching Out

After a roughly 2-hour grace period, we reach out via email and SMS*. The email carries a link that opens LastFlare so you can check in instantly.

Stage 3: Guardians

After about 6 hours, we reach out to your guardians to check on you. They can confirm your safety on your behalf.

Stage 4: Final Chance

After about 12 hours, one last email with a single cancel button. Even at this point, one tap stops everything. Your messages are only delivered when every safeguard has been exhausted.

Message Delivery

Guardian confirmation releases your messages — and if you've enabled it, they also go out automatically once every stage has run. Either way, you can cancel right up until the moment of delivery.

Nothing happens right away. Our multi-step safety verification gives you multiple chances to confirm you're okay — through push notifications, SMS, email, and your guardians. Your messages stay sealed until the verification steps run their course — a guardian confirmation releases them, or, if you've enabled auto-delivery, they go out after all stages finish without a response. You can also set a vacation/pause mode for planned absences.

LastFlare uses AES-256-GCM encryption to protect your messages at rest. Encryption and decryption happen on our servers — we hold the key and are transparent about this in our privacy policy. We cannot share your content with third parties without a valid legal order, and we will always notify you if legally permitted to do so.

This is one of our top design priorities. We're building data export tools so you always own your data, and our system is designed so that pending deliveries can complete even through disruptions. We'll communicate any changes well in advance.

Not at all. Many people use check-in apps simply for peace of mind while traveling, hiking, or living alone. Legacy mode is about thoughtfully preparing messages for your loved ones for the future. Think of it as a time capsule with a safety net.

Tap the link in the reminder email or SMS — it opens the LastFlare app directly to the check-in screen. If the app isn't installed yet, the link guides you to download it first.

Nothing is ever sent without your missed check-in triggering the process — and even then, four verification stages must all be exhausted first. If you check in regularly, your messages stay safely stored in your Vault and are never delivered. You are always in control.
